Educational Field Trips and Outreach Programs

Spark! offers a variety of field trip experiences and outreach programs for your classroom or after school program. Field trips to the museum include free-play in the Museum’s educational exhibit areas and an interactive science activity or craft. During an outreach program a museum educator will come to your school or community center.

Schools unable to pay may be eligible to receive free or reduced admission.

FIELD TRIPS

Program: Polar Bears
Age group: PreK-1st grade
Students will listen to a story about polar bears and create a polar bear craft. Students will also participate in a science experiment to learn how blubber keeps polar bears warm in the harsh arctic winters. $6 per child/adults free

Program: Birds in Spring
Age group: Kindergaren-1st grade
Students will listen to a story about birds and participate in hands-on activities to learn about nests and what we can do to help birds. $6 per child/adults free

Program: Seasons Change
Age group:  Kindergarten -1st grade
Students will listen to a story and explore hands-on activities to learn why leaves change color in the fall. Students will then make a leaf collecting bag. $6 per child/adults free

Program: What is Nano Science?
Age Group: 1st-3rd grade
Students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about nanoscience: the study of materials that are a billionth of a meter. $6 per child/adults free

Pre-K, Head Start and Kindergarten classrooms are welcome to request a craft-based visit. $4 per child/adults free.

Groups of ten or more must schedule their visit.

 

SCIENCE NIGHT OUTREACH PROGRAM
Schedule a Science Night program for your school or community center and Spark! will provide you with hands-on science activities for a two-hour period.

 

CLASSROOM OR AFTER SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMS

One hour programs for your classroom or afterschool program.

Program: What is Nano Science?
Age group: 1st-4th grade
Students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about nanoscience: the study of materials that are a billionth of a meter. Schedule a Science Night program for your school or community center and Spark! will provide you with hands-on science activities for a two-hour period.

Program: Grow Up Strong
Age group: 1st-3rd grade
Through science demonstrations and crafts, students will explore ways to keep their bodies healthy. Topics explored include exercise through play, stress relief, eating healthy and dental care.

Program: Halloween Science
Halloween can be fun, spooky and educational. In this program, children can listen to “ghosts” as they learn about sound, mix an acid and base to make “ghosts” appear, and create slime and “worms” while learning about polymers.

Program: Holidays
In this program, students learn about the many winter holidays celebrated throughout the world. Students will learn where these holidays are celebrated and do a fun craft for each holiday. Holidays include St. Lucia’s Day, Diwali, Chanukah and Christmas.

In class or after school outreach programs are $60 per classroom for schools in Monongalia County.  Science Night is $150 for schools in Monongalia County.
Additional travel costs may apply to schools outside Monongalia County
Schools 10-20 miles from Spark! add $20 to cost; 21-30 miles add $30 to cost; schools 21-40 miles add $40 to cost. (The additional travel costs are only added per day. If a school schedules 2 programs on the same day, the school will not be charged for the travel twice.)
