International Polar Bear Day

Space Day
March 3 from 10 am-1 pm
Visit Spark for our annual Space Day event. Children and adults will enjoy the inflatable planetarium show and the space related activities and demonstrations. Admission is $5 per person for non-members. For Spark! Imagination and Science Center members, admission is $5 per child, adults free.

Hands-On Science

Our Hands-On Science Area for children 5-12 years old and their grown-ups will be open. Visitors will explore physics, engineering, math and logic through interactive activities. (Children under 5 will not be allowed in the Hands-On Science Area, but can enjoy our Eureka! Science Center, the museum’s permanent science exhibit.) General admission applies. The Hands-On Science Area was made possible through a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle of Northcentral WV with additional support provided by the LEGO Children’s Fund.

Do you love robots? Celebrate National Robotics Week at Spark! Mountaineer Area Robotics (MARS) will be at the museum with some of their robots. There will also be robot related crafts, a robot obstacle course and more. Admission to this special event is free with donation of food for a food pantry.

Join us for these special evening art programs.  Inspired by the painting style of Tanzanian artists, the Tinga Tinga painting style is characterized by intense color, movement-descriptive figures and shapes, and many, many dots. Illuminated Initials
Join us for these special evening art programs. The practice of illumination — decoration of pages with ornate lettering, luminous color and precious metals, was developed during the middle ages. Visitors will design one of their own initials on reflective board and add transparent color — it appears to glow with reflective light from within. Museum exhibits will also be open for exploration. Science Day
September 29 from 10 a.m.-1p.m.
Children and adults will get excited about science at our annual Science Day event. Children will participate in fun and interactive activities on forensics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, nano-science and much more.

Tickets are $5 per person for non-members, $5 per child, free for adults for Spark members. Ticket price includes admission to the museum and participation in all science table activities. Children who visit all the tables will receive a prize.

Teddy Bear Clinic
September 15 from 11 am to 1 pm
Bring your teddy bear or favorite stuffed animal to Spark to learn about First Aid. Friendly staff from MedExpress Urgent Care will provide First Aid and Safety Demonstrations that educate children about basic first aid and illness prevention. Learn about preventing the spread of germs, why people get sick and when to visit the doctor’s office or an urgent care center. Free with regular admission.

Adult Halloween on canvas
October 18 from 6-730 pm
An adults-only Makers Program, participants will create a Halloween themed piece of art on canvas, and then make it light up using LED lights and copper tape. The program will include an introduction to basic circuitry concepts. All materials needed for the workshop will be provided and no experience is necessary. The cost of the program is $15 for members, and $20 for non-members. The program fee includes all design and craft materials and instructions. Prepayment is required.

Panel Book
October 20 at 9 am-1030 am
Kids will turn Halloween themed poems into art by creating a “glass” panel book. A variation on a tunnel book, a panel book creates the illusion of depth in a 2D object using clear CD cases. Participants will learn about scale, color, perspective, and light while combining art and literature. This program is for kids between the ages of 8-14 years old. The cost of the program is $10 per child. The program fee includes all design and craft materials and instructions. Prepayment is required.  Guardians must be present in the museum during the program.

Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelly’s, masterpiece, Frankenstein

Celebrate Frankenstein will include exciting maker activities related to robotics, genetic engineering, and electricity. By teaching a robot how to draw, experimenting with simple machines, or even bringing their own creature to life, guest will confront the same questions and ideas that puzzled the fictional Victor Frankenstein on a dark and stormy night two centuries ago. Admission is $5 per person for non-members, $3 per child, adults free for Spark members.

Participants will learn about Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday also known as the Day of the Dead, by engaging in hands-on activities, including decorating Sugar Skulls, a traditional folk art from Mexico used to celebrate the holiday (as supplies last). Tickets for Day of the Dead activities are $8 per child, $2 per adult for non-members or $4 per child and free for adults for members. The special activities are made for kids 6 years old and up.

To celebrate West Virginia’s birthday, Spark is partnering with other Mountaineer Country Museums to encourage everyone to celebrate WV. Each family will receive a passport that describes special family friendly hours and events at all of the participating sites the weekend of June 23-25. Participants who get their passport stamped at 3 different sites during the weekend will be entered to win a prize. Also at the kickoff event, participants can visit Spark’s exhibits, listen to live Appalachian music and do Appalachian crafts. The Kick Off Event is free.

Do you love robots? Celebrate National Robotics Week at Spark! Participants will have an opportunity to learn about and manipulate the Mountaineer Area Robotics (MARS) robots, take home a drawing made by a robot, build a brushbot and play with a Sphero.  Admission to this special event is free with donation of food for a food pantry.

Cardboard Creations Day

A cardboard box can be so many things, a doll house, an arcade game, a space ship and so much more. Spark will provide the materials and visitors will provide the imagination at our first ever Cardboard Creations Day. Regular Admission applies.

Bites and Brews
April 22 from 5 pm to 9 pm
Enjoy craft beer, delicious food, and great music at West Virginia Bites and Brews at the WV National Guard Readiness Center at 90 Army Way in Morgantown.

West Virginia Bites & Brews offers attendees samples of “bites” from local food trucks and mobile vendors as well tastes of several microbrews. There will be huge raffle baskets and amazing music from local band, Main Street Hustle. Cost is $40 per person for “bites and brews” and $30 for “bites only”. There is a $5 discount per ticket when purchased before April 1, 2017. Tickets are available at the Museum and online at sparkwv.yapsody.com.
